Minimum Qualifications

Masters degree in Engineering, Materials Science, Computer Science or related field or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience. At least five years’ experience editing and developing nationally competitive grant proposals for external, peer reviewed competitions. Thorough knowledge of the organizational environment of higher education and research universities sufficient to understand client priorities, issues, motivations and constraints. Thorough knowledge of standard processes, protocols and procedures related to obtaining and managing external funding. Excellent consulting, relationship building, and strategic thinking skills, including experience organizing or coordinating multi-disciplinary teams and intra- and inter-institutional partnerships. Experience assisting faculty in building relationships with corporate and industry partners and in seeking funding from those sponsors. Demonstrated successful track record of developing competitive and complex research initiatives and proposals. Thorough knowledge of the avenues to mine funding opportunities. Extensive experience in an academic research environment with thorough knowledge of relevant agencies and their policies and procedures. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Excellent organizational and analytical skills. Ability to communicate effectively with others.

Desired Qualifications

PhD in Engineering, Materials Science, Computer Science or related field. Seven to ten years’ experience serving as a research development professional. Extensive experience developing faculty capacity and using systems for tracking faculty capacity, success, and impact.

Position Purpose

The Research Development Officer is responsible for working directly with faculty, departments, centers, and programs to strategically identify and pursue external funding. The RDO will also work with faculty to further their competitive positioning and develop tools and strategies available to all faculty that improve their competitive capacity and reduce the time faculty spend engaging in the pre-award activities required to obtain external funding.
